Travelling in Costa Rica: what to know
Driving with navigation
Most visitors drive with Waze or Google Maps, which use little data but need a connection to reroute around closed roads and river crossings. Download offline maps for the whole route as a backup before each travel day.
Coverage in the mountains and on the coasts
Signal is good in towns and along main highways. Expect gaps on mountain roads around Monteverde, on the Osa Peninsula and along the southern Caribbean coast, where lodges often rely on wifi.
Remote parks
Corcovado and Tortuguero are reached by boat or on foot and have little or no mobile coverage. Tell your lodge or guide your plans, and carry offline copies of bookings.

Where your data exits
Current Costa Rica plans exit to the internet in the United States, so websites and apps may treat you as being there. It rarely matters in Costa Rica, but banking apps may ask for an extra check.

Does the Costa Rica eSIM have 5G?
No. Claro, its network in Costa Rica, runs at up to 4G.
Which networks does the Costa Rica eSIM use?
It connects to Claro (4G), our partner network in Costa Rica.
Which regional eSIM also covers Costa Rica?
Two regional eSIMs cover Costa Rica as well: the South America eSIM from US$13.30 (up to 20 countries) and the Global eSIM from US$11.90 (up to 129 countries). Each covers several countries on one plan, handy if the trip also takes in El Salvador or Guatemala.
Can I share the Costa Rica eSIM data by hotspot?
Yes, on the daily plans, from US$3.80 a day; hotspot use counts toward the same daily allowance.
When do the days start on the Costa Rica eSIM?
On first connection in Costa Rica, not at purchase or install. Install it on wifi before you fly, up to 180 days after buying.
Can I make calls with the Costa Rica eSIM?
No, it is data only, with no Costa Rica number: WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work over the data.
Where does the Costa Rica eSIM connect to the internet from?
From the United States, so apps may see you there rather than in Costa Rica, which mostly matters to banking and streaming.
Does the Costa Rica eSIM work in the national parks?
Around park entrances, towns and main roads, usually yes. Deep inside parks such as Corcovado, and on boat only routes like Tortuguero, coverage is patchy or absent, so download offline maps and park information before you go.
Can I use Waze in Costa Rica with a travel eSIM?
Yes. Waze and Google Maps both work on the eSIM data connection. They use little data, but download offline maps too, because mountain roads have gaps in coverage.
Which network does the Costa Rica eSIM use?
The networks for each plan are listed in the plan tables on this page. Your phone connects to them as a roaming visitor, so switch Data Roaming on for the eSIM line when you land.
Heading somewhere else?
One eSIM can cover a whole region, handy for multi-country trips.
