One eSIM for Africa: which countries each plan covers, and what it costs

Cape Town and Victoria Falls, Marrakech and Cairo, or a week on safari and then a beach in Mauritius. An Africa trip often crosses borders, and the first question for your phone is whether one Africa eSIM covers your route at all.

What does one eSIM for Africa cost?

Our plans for 30 days, in US dollars:

Plan5GB10GB
Africa (21 areas)US$38.60US$68.80
Kenya onlyUS$18.90US$34.40
Tanzania onlyUS$35.40US$62.90
South Africa onlyUS$12.70US$22.40
Morocco onlyUS$12.80US$21.50

The Africa row is our 21 area list, which does not include South Africa, Botswana or Namibia. Our 25+ area list adds South Africa and Botswana, but comes only in 1GB and 5GB sizes and costs more. RoamMore wrote this page and sells these plans; every price comes from our live catalogue and changes when it does.

How a regional eSIM works in Africa

A regional eSIM is one eSIM with agreements across several countries. When you cross a border, your phone drops the last network and joins a partner network in the new country. There is nothing to buy at the border and no second QR code to scan. Our two Africa lists cover different countries, and the 21 area list runs mostly on Airtel, with Orange in Morocco, Vodafone in Egypt and Ghana, and Econet in Zimbabwe. It starts from US$9.90 (updated 30 Oct 2026), and our Africa eSIM page has the exact list for each plan, with the network you will use in each country.

One regional plan or one per country?

Your tripBest fitWhy
One countryCountry plan, usuallyCosts less; Uganda, Rwanda and Madagascar are the exceptions
Two of Morocco, Egypt and TunisiaTwo country plansFar less than one Africa plan for the same data
South Africa and BotswanaTwo country plansLess than our 25+ area list, which stops at 5GB
South Africa, then Victoria FallsSouth Africa plan, plus Zimbabwe or ZambiaNo Africa list covers South Africa and Zimbabwe together
Two or more of Uganda, Rwanda and TanzaniaAfrica planLess than a plan for each, and one install

Live country prices: South Africa from US$4.50, Egypt from US$4.80, Zimbabwe from US$6.50 and Zambia from US$9.70. In Uganda and Rwanda it runs the other way: 5GB for 30 days is US$40.60 in Uganda and US$40.60 in Rwanda, against US$38.60 on the Africa plan. Add every country on your route to the plan finder and it compares the regional plans with a plan per country. For a Kenya and Tanzania safari, our safari guide goes into the detail, signal inside the parks included.

Countries to double check

  • South Africa and Botswana. Not on the 21 area list that the table prices. Our 25+ area list covers both, in 1GB and 5GB sizes only, so our South Africa eSIM is the better buy there. Our Botswana eSIM is US$49.70 for 5GB, about the same as the 25+ area list at that size.
  • Namibia and Ethiopia. On neither Africa list, and we do not sell a plan for Namibia.
  • Countries on one list only. Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Algeria are on the 21 area list only; Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Mali and Eswatini are on the 25+ area list only.
  • Islands. Seychelles, Madagascar and Reunion are on both lists, Mauritius on the 21 area list only, and Zanzibar is part of Tanzania. For a beach week on its own, our Mauritius and Seychelles plans cost less than the Africa plan; in Madagascar the Africa plan costs less than our Madagascar eSIM.

Southern Africa: South Africa, Victoria Falls and Botswana

No Africa list we sell covers South Africa and Zimbabwe together, or Zimbabwe and Botswana, so a Southern Africa trip usually runs on country plans: South Africa first, then a Zimbabwe or Zambia plan for Victoria Falls, and Botswana if you go on there. Install them at home on wifi and switch which line uses data as you cross. Victoria Falls sits on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, and both are on the 21 area list, so if you stay on one side and cross for a day, the Africa plan keeps you online on both; a Zimbabwe or Zambia plan alone has no service across the border.

North Africa: Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia

All three are on both Africa lists, but each has a country plan that costs far less than the Africa plan: 5GB for 30 days is US$12.80 in Morocco, US$13.80 in Egypt and US$11.10 in Tunisia. For one or two of them, buy a Morocco, Egypt or Tunisia plan for each leg. Algeria is on the 21 area list only, on Djezzy 4G.

If you lose signal after a border

  1. Wait a couple of minutes.
  2. Restart your phone.
  3. In the eSIM line settings, turn off automatic network selection and choose the carrier listed for that country on our plan page.
  4. Still stuck? Message us on WhatsApp or email [email protected] with the country and what your screen shows.

Our landing day checklist works the same at every border.

How much data for an Africa trip?

Two weeks of Standard use (maps, social media, photos and video calls) is about 14GB. Our cost and data guide has the full table, and if your route takes you far from towns, our guide to remote areas and backup plans covers offline maps and what to do with no signal.

Questions travellers ask

Which countries does the RoamMore Africa eSIM cover?

We sell two Africa lists. The 21 area list covers Algeria, Chad, DR Congo, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Reunion, Rwanda, Seychelles, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The 25+ area list adds South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Mali and more, but leaves out Algeria, Mauritius, Rwanda and Zimbabwe. Neither covers Namibia.

Does an Africa eSIM cover South Africa?

Only our 25+ area list, which comes in 1GB and 5GB sizes and costs more than the 21 area list. For a trip that is mostly South Africa, our South Africa plan costs far less than the 25+ area list of the same size.

Is one Africa eSIM cheaper than one eSIM per country?

Usually not. Our Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia plans cost far less than the Africa plan for the same data, and our South Africa plan far less than the 25+ area list. The Africa plan comes out ahead where country plans are dear, as in Uganda, Rwanda and Madagascar, and it gives you one install and one balance across borders. The plan finder compares both for your route.

Does one eSIM cover both sides of Victoria Falls?

Yes. Victoria Falls sits on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, and our 21 area Africa list covers both. Our 25+ area list has Zambia but not Zimbabwe, and no Africa list we sell covers Zimbabwe together with South Africa or Botswana.
