One eSIM for the USA and Canada (and Mexico): one plan or two?

Seattle to Vancouver, a drive to Niagara Falls, or a cruise from Vancouver up to Alaska. Trips across the USA and Canada border are common, and your phone should keep working on both sides of it.

What do the options cost?

Our plans for 30 days, in US dollars:

Plan5GB10GB
North AmericaUS$21.30US$36
USA onlyUS$9.10US$14.90
Canada onlyUS$14.20US$24.20
Mexico onlyUS$18US$32.60

We sell two North America lists: the USA and Canada, and the USA, Canada and Mexico. The table shows the lower price of the two for each size, and the plan finder only offers a list that covers every stop you add. RoamMore wrote this page and sells these plans; every price comes from our live catalogue and changes when it does.

Live country prices: the USA from US$3.80, Canada from US$5.20, Mexico from US$5.40. The full lists, with the network in each country, are on our North America eSIM page.

Road trips and border towns

Near the border your phone may join the other country's network before you cross. On a North America plan that covers both countries, this does not matter. On a single country plan your eSIM simply has no service on the other side until you switch to another line, so keep your home line's Data Roaming off to avoid your own carrier's roaming charges.

Alaska cruises

Alaska cruises usually start in Vancouver or Seattle and call at ports in both countries, so one USA and Canada plan covers every stop. Signal in small Alaska towns can be patchy, and at sea there is none on any travel eSIM, because ships run their own satellite networks. Our cruise guide covers what to switch off before you board.

Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico

  • Mexico. On one of our two North America lists, on Movistar's 4G network. The plan finder picks that list when you add Mexico.
  • Hawaii and Alaska. Part of the United States. Away from towns and main highways, signal is thin on every network.
  • Puerto Rico. Not on our USA or North America plans. Buy a Puerto Rico eSIM, from US$5.70, or use our Caribbean plan.

If you lose signal after the border

  1. Wait a couple of minutes.
  2. Restart your phone.
  3. In the eSIM line settings, turn off automatic network selection and choose the carrier listed for that country on our plan page.
  4. Still stuck? Message us on WhatsApp or email [email protected] with the country and what your screen shows.

Our landing day checklist works the same at a land border.

How much data for a North American trip?

Two weeks of Standard use (maps, social media, photos and video calls) is about 14GB, and navigation on a road trip adds a little each day. Our cost and data guide has the full table, and our guide to the best eSIM for the USA compares brands for the USA on its own.

Questions travellers ask

Does one eSIM work in both the USA and Canada?

Yes. Our North America plans cover both countries, on Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T in the USA and Rogers in Canada, depending on the plan. Each plan page lists its networks.

Does a North America eSIM cover Mexico?

One of our two North America lists adds Mexico, on Movistar's 4G network. Our USA and Canada list does not, so add Mexico in the plan finder if it is on your route.

Is it cheaper to buy a USA plan and a Canada plan?

Usually, for the same total data, especially when most of the trip is in the USA. One North America plan is simpler, because you install once and one balance follows you across the border.

Will it work on an Alaska cruise?

In port in the USA and Canada, yes, though signal in small Alaska towns can be patchy. At sea, ships switch to their own satellite networks, which travel eSIMs do not cover, so turn off Data Roaming on your home line before you board.

Is Puerto Rico included?

No. Puerto Rico is not on our USA or North America plans. We sell a separate Puerto Rico eSIM, and Puerto Rico is also on our Caribbean plan.

Ready for your trip?

Every eSIM comes with a real person on email and WhatsApp, and a full refund within 30 days if it is not installed yet.
