eSIM for China: do you need a VPN for Google and WhatsApp?

Generally no, if your eSIM sends its data out of the country. That is the whole question with a China eSIM: not which network it uses, but where your traffic meets the internet.
Do you need a VPN in China with a travel eSIM?
Generally no, on a RoamMore plan. Every one of our China plans sends your data out to the internet in Hong Kong or Singapore, outside mainland China's filtering. Google, Gmail, WhatsApp and Instagram usually load on mobile data the way they do at home, with no VPN to install and nothing to set up.
This is the same answer our China page gives, and it applies to mobile data only. Wifi in mainland China works differently, which the next sections explain.
A VPN is still worth having if you need to reach your work network, or as a backup. Install and test it at home, where downloading and signing in is simple.
Why it works, and what we cannot promise
It works because the eSIM roams. Your phone uses a Chinese network for the signal, but your data travels back to the plan's home network and reaches the internet from there. On our China plans that exit is Hong Kong or Singapore.
Every plan of ours that covers mainland China exits outside it: the China plans and the China, Hong Kong and Macao plan in Hong Kong or Singapore, the China, Japan and South Korea plan in Hong Kong, and the wider Asia and Global plans in Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Kingdom or Norway.
What we cannot promise is that every site works every day. A website may still treat you as being in Hong Kong or Singapore, and banking or streaming apps may ask for an extra check. Our guide to where your eSIM's internet comes out explains why.
Wifi is different: hotel, airport and cafe wifi in mainland China
Wifi in mainland China goes through the local internet, so the usual blocks apply to it. On hotel, airport or cafe wifi, Google, WhatsApp and Instagram usually will not load, even with our eSIM installed.
The fix is simple: for those apps, switch wifi off and use the eSIM's mobile data. Turn wifi back on afterwards for anything that works on the local internet, such as large downloads you do not need from a blocked site.
Size your plan with this in mind. If you would normally lean on hotel wifi for video calls and photo uploads, those will now come out of your eSIM's data, so buy a little more than you would for a trip elsewhere.
Which plan: China only, with Hong Kong and Macao, or with Japan and South Korea
Pick the plan that matches every place on your trip, because a single country plan stops at its border.
| Plan | Covers | Network in mainland China | Unlimited, 14 days at 1GB a day |
|---|---|---|---|
| China | Mainland China | China Mobile, with 5G | US$27 |
| China, Hong Kong and Macao | All three | China Unicom with 5G, or China Telecom 4G | US$52.20 |
| China, Japan and South Korea | All three | China Unicom, with 5G | US$69 |
| Asia (12, 20 or 20+ areas) | Mainland China, Hong Kong and many more | Varies by plan | See the Asia page |
Fixed data on the China plan: 5GB for 30 days is US$8.40, 10GB US$14.50 and 20GB US$25. Two of our Asia plans, the 14 and 7 area lists, do not cover mainland China, so check before you buy. The plan finder compares every plan for a mixed trip.
How much data for a China trip
Plan for more data than usual in mainland China, because you will use mobile data where you would normally use wifi.
Maps, translation, ride hailing and payment apps all run on data, and you will use them more in a country where signs and menus may be unfamiliar. At our Standard use, about 1GB a day, a week comes to about 7GB, so the 10GB plan suits most one week trips and 20GB suits two weeks.
If you mostly message and use maps, 5GB covers a week. If you stream, work online or share your connection, look at unlimited below. Our cost and data guide breaks down what each app uses.
Set up before you fly
Do your setup at home, where every app store and website is open to you.
- Install the eSIM on home wifi and leave it switched off until you land.
- Download offline maps of the cities you will visit.
- Install a translation app and download the Chinese language pack for offline use.
- Install and sign in to every app you plan to use, including any payment or ride hailing app, from its official store page.
- Keep your home SIM on for texts such as bank codes, with its Data Roaming off.
Our guide to keeping your home number explains how texts reach you while the eSIM does the data.
Hong Kong and Macao: their own networks and no firewall
Hong Kong and Macao have their own mobile networks and their own internet, without mainland China's filtering. A China plan does not cover them.
For Hong Kong alone, our Hong Kong plans run on csl and SmarTone, both with 5G, and exit in Singapore: 5GB for 30 days is US$7.80. Macao's plan runs on CTM and 3, both with 5G.
For a trip that crosses from Shenzhen or Guangzhou into Hong Kong, or takes the ferry on to Macao, the China, Hong Kong and Macao plan covers all three on one eSIM. Every one of our Asia plans that includes mainland China also covers Hong Kong. See the Hong Kong page and the Macao page.
Unlimited for the whole trip: Endless in China
Endless is our unlimited eSIM with one price for the whole trip, and it sells mainland China at 1GB a day for US$14.50 for a week or US$27 for two weeks. After the day's 1GB it keeps going at 1 Mbps, enough for maps and messaging, and the full speed refills every 24 hours.
Endless suits a China trip well, because so much runs over mobile data there. It also sells the China, Hong Kong and Macao plan, at 1GB a day cruising at 1 Mbps, and the China, Japan and South Korea plan, at 1GB a day cruising at 384 kbps.
Like our fixed plans, Endless starts when it first connects in a covered country, so you can install it at home before you fly.

Questions travellers ask
Do I need a VPN in China with a travel eSIM?
Generally no, on our plans. Every RoamMore China plan sends your data out to the internet in Hong Kong or Singapore, so sites and apps that are blocked in mainland China usually load on mobile data with no VPN to install. Nobody can promise every site works every day, so save anything essential offline before you go.
Will WhatsApp and Google Maps work in China on an eSIM?
Usually yes, on the eSIM's mobile data, because your traffic leaves the mainland before it reaches the internet. On hotel or cafe wifi in mainland China they usually will not, so keep mobile data on for those apps.
Does the China eSIM work in Hong Kong and Macao?
No, our China plans cover mainland China only. A China, Hong Kong and Macao plan covers all three on one eSIM, and every one of our Asia plans that includes mainland China also covers Hong Kong.
Can I use hotel wifi in China for Instagram?
Usually not. Hotel wifi in mainland China goes through the local internet, where Instagram and many other foreign apps are blocked. Switch wifi off for a moment and use the eSIM's mobile data instead.
Is there one eSIM for China, Japan and South Korea?
Yes. We sell a plan that covers mainland China, Japan and South Korea together, and several of our Asia plans cover all three as well as Hong Kong.
Do I get a Chinese phone number with a travel eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data only, with no Chinese number and no ordinary calls or texts. Apps that ask for a Chinese number to sign up will not accept it, so set up anything you need before you fly, and keep your home SIM on for texts such as bank codes.
