Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and Rarotonga are popular island trips from New Zealand and Australia, and each one connects a little differently. Here is what works where, island by island.

Island by island: networks, 4G and prices

Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea each have their own RoamMore plan on 4G, and our Oceania plan covers all five together. New Caledonia and French Polynesia have their own plans only, and the Cook Islands none.

Every country plan here starts when it first connects in the country it covers, so you can install it at home in New Zealand or Australia and it waits. The Oceania plan is different: it covers New Zealand and Australia too, so it starts as soon as it connects at home. Install it, but keep its line switched off until you land on the first island. Our Fiji plans exit to the internet in the United Kingdom, and the Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Oceania plans in Singapore, so a banking app may ask for an extra check.

One plan for several islands: what the Oceania plan covers

Our Oceania plan covers exactly eight countries on one eSIM: Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Australia and New Zealand. It suits a trip that combines islands, a stopover in Auckland or Sydney, or a cruise. Because it works at home as well, switch its line on only when you reach the first place you want it to start.

3GB for 15 days is US$16.90 and 5GB for 30 days is US$28. On the islands it uses Digicel on 4G. In Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea it costs less than the country plan of the same size, so it is worth a look even for one of those islands. In Fiji alone, the Fiji plan costs less.

It does not cover New Caledonia, French Polynesia or the Cook Islands. If your trip includes one of those, you need that country's plan as well, or another way online there. Our cruise guide works through a South Pacific cruise port by port, and the Oceania page lists every plan.

Fiji: Vodafone on the Fiji plan, Digicel on the Oceania plan

In Fiji, our Fiji plans and the Oceania plan use different networks: Vodafone on the Fiji plans, Digicel on the Oceania plan. Both are 4G, with no 5G.

That is worth knowing if you are heading somewhere one network is stronger than the other, such as a resort on an outer island. Ask your resort which network works best there, and pick the plan to match.

Signal is patchier on the smaller outer islands and on boat transfers than in the main towns, and resort wifi can be slow too. Download bookings and offline maps before a transfer. Our Fiji page has every plan, from US$5.70 for 1GB.

Rarotonga and the Cook Islands: no plan from us

We do not sell a plan for the Cook Islands, and the Oceania plan does not cover them either. That is a gap in what we sell, not a statement about every eSIM.

For Rarotonga and Aitutaki, you have two options. Check your home carrier's roaming page for the Cook Islands before you fly, including what it charges a day. Or buy a local SIM when you arrive.

Either way, download offline maps and your bookings before you leave, and keep your accommodation's wifi details handy. Our guide to NZ roaming and travel eSIMs explains how each carrier's daily charges work.

Noumea and Tahiti: why the price jumps

New Caledonia and French Polynesia are on none of our regional plans, and their own plans cost more than three times as much as any Oceania country's. Our 1GB, 7 day plan is US$53.20 for New Caledonia and US$30.90 for French Polynesia, against US$5.70 for Fiji.

Our prices follow what each network charges us, and these two charge far more. Our New Caledonia plan runs on Mobilis, with 5G, and our French Polynesia plan on Vini, on 4G.

For a single cruise port day in Noumea, the ship's wifi or free wifi near the terminal may be enough. For a longer stay, compare our plan with your home carrier's roaming and with a local SIM from the airport or a shop in town, and pick the cheapest for the data you need.

Is NZ roaming cheaper in the Pacific?

Sometimes, and Spark's 20GB pack is the one to compare. Daily roaming from a New Zealand carrier usually costs more than an eSIM over a week, because it charges for every day you use your phone.

Spark's 20GB, 30 day roaming pack is the exception in Fiji: our NZ roaming guide, which read the carriers' prices on their own pages on 2 October 2026, found it costs less than our Fiji 20GB plan at any exchange rate. Our Fiji 20GB plan for 30 days is US$66.20.

For a smaller amount of data in Fiji, our Fiji 3GB plan costs less than a week of the cheapest daily roaming option in that guide. Roaming wins on convenience if you need your NZ number for calls with nothing to set up.

How much data on an island holiday

Often less than you expect. Across our travellers in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, the median day online used 376MB (July to October 2026), lower than in Asia.

So for a week of maps, messaging and photos, 3GB is usually enough, and 5GB leaves room for video calls home. If you stream, upload a lot of video or share your connection with a laptop, look at unlimited below.

Resort wifi helps, when it works. Treat it as a bonus rather than a plan: on small islands it is often slow at busy times of day. Our guide to how much data travellers really use has the full figures.

Unlimited for a resort week: Endless in Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu

Endless is our unlimited eSIM with one price for the whole trip, and it sells each of these islands and the Oceania plan. At 1GB a day, a week costs US$27.80 in Fiji, US$48.10 in Samoa, US$48.10 in Tonga, US$48.10 in Vanuatu and US$45.30 on the Oceania plan.

After the day's 1GB, the speed drops until it refills 24 hours later: to 512 kbps in Fiji, and to 1 Mbps in Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and on the Oceania plan. Both are enough for maps and messaging.

Endless suits a resort week if you stream in the evenings or share a connection, and would rather not watch a meter.

Questions travellers ask

What is the best eSIM for Fiji from New Zealand?

For most trips, a Fiji eSIM installed at home before you fly. Our Fiji plans run on Vodafone's 4G network and only start counting days when they first connect in Fiji. If the trip also takes in Samoa, Tonga or Vanuatu, our Oceania plan covers them all on one eSIM, on Digicel in Fiji.

Is there an eSIM for the Cook Islands?

Not from us. None of our plans covers the Cook Islands, including the Oceania plan. Check your New Zealand carrier's roaming for Rarotonga, or buy a local SIM when you arrive.

Does one eSIM cover Fiji, Samoa and Tonga?

Yes, our Oceania plan. It covers exactly eight countries, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Australia and New Zealand, on one eSIM. It does not cover New Caledonia, French Polynesia or the Cook Islands.

Is there 5G in Fiji or Samoa on a travel eSIM?

Not on ours. Our Fiji plans run on Vodafone's 4G network, our Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu plans on Digicel's 4G, and the Oceania plan on Digicel's 4G in all four. 4G is enough for maps, messaging, social media and video calls home.

Will the eSIM work on Fiji's outer islands?

It depends on the island. Coverage on the smaller outer islands and on boat transfers is patchier than in the main towns, so download maps and bookings before a transfer and ask your resort what signal to expect.

Is roaming cheaper than an eSIM in the Pacific?

Sometimes. Daily roaming from a New Zealand carrier usually costs more than an eSIM over a week, but Spark's 20GB roaming pack costs less in Fiji than our Fiji 20GB plan. Our NZ roaming guide compares the carriers' own prices side by side.
