Travelling in Japan: what to know
Four networks, one eSIM
The eSIM can use NTT docomo, SoftBank, KDDI au and Rakuten Mobile, and your phone joins whichever is strongest where you are, with nothing to change when you move between cities.
Data only, no Japanese number
There is no Japanese phone number on the eSIM and no ordinary calls or texts. Call home over WhatsApp or FaceTime on the eSIM data. Keep your own SIM switched on with its Data Roaming off, so texts such as bank codes still reach your home number.
Landing at Narita, Haneda or Kansai
Turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, turn Data Roaming on for it and choose it for mobile data. It usually connects within a few minutes. If it does not, restart the phone rather than deleting the eSIM.
